Our History

In 2009, Open Austin started as an open data meetup by William Hurley, and the group successfully advocated for City to establish an Open Data Portal.

In 2018, Open Austin inspired the creation of the City of Austin's now-defunct Office of Design and Delivery and became a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit.

In 2024, Open Austin brought on its first staff member, Liani Lye.

Open Austin will always be volunteer-led.  Since 2009, we've evolved to be a regional leader in public interest technology and civic technology, open data, and evidence-based policy.

About Us

Open Austin is a 501(c)3 and a member of the Alliance of Civic Technologists and Electronic Frontier Alliance.  We were an early member of Code for America's now-defunct Brigade Network.
